How to Honor + Respect Mother’s Day

Holidays are a time to celebrate, but for some, they can be extremely triggering events. Mother’s Day, while meant to recognize all the things a mom does for her children, can bring some negative feelings for other individuals. Maybe someone has lost their mother, or isn’t very close to their mom. Or perhaps someone is struggling to become a mother. There are multiple ways that we can provide understanding and compassion to these individual journeys. Therefore, I wanted to share a few ways that you can show respect on Mother’s Day this year:

Reach Out

If you know of a friend or family member that has lost a parent, or has a strained relationship, reach out to them on Mother’s Day. Let them know they’re in your thoughts and heart. Sometimes just knowing someone is thinking of you can help get through the toughest of times. Maybe even suggest you go out for a hike or other activity to help give that friend a shoulder to cry on or a distraction.

Don’t Assume

Please never assume a woman wants to be a mother, or is a mother, or has a mother, etc. You just don’t know everyone’s individual situation and assuming puts everyone in an awkward position. Let the person offer any information they feel is comfortable to share. Approach conversations only with those closest to you and lightly. Maybe you ask if that’s something they desire? If not, that’s okay and show your support for each and every decision being made that’s best for them.

Honor Other Mother Figures

If you have a great relationship with your biological mother, that’s wonderful! However, there are so many other mother figures you can have in your life who you can celebrate. A step mom, aunt, teacher, grandmother, family friend, co-worker, so on and so forth. Make sure that these individuals know the role they’ve played in your life and how much you appreciate them. You can also treat them to a special gift!

Mother’s Day is a wonderful time to show that special person in your life how much they mean to you. No matter who that special mom-figure is to you, I’m wishing you all a very happy day! I’m so grateful to my own mom for her constant support + unconditional love.
